The range and diversity of Audra's work as a performer is second to none. She has won six Tony Awards, two Grammy Awards and one Emmy Award. Audra McDonald, who won Six Tony Awards in a row and two Grammy Awards in 2015 was recognized as one of Time magazine's 100 Most Influential People. President Barack Obama also awarded her the National Medal of Arts -the nation's most prestigious award for excellence in this area. A soprano with unmatched beauty, and an ability to tell the truth in a dramatic way, her roles on Broadway or the opera are as comfortable as the roles in movies and TV. Apart from performing in theater McDonald has also an impressive career as an international musician and recording artist. McDonald was brought up within Fresno California by her musical parents. She studied classical music at Juilliard School, New York. One year after graduation McDonald was awarded the Tony Award Best Performance for the Lead Actress of a Musical at Carousel in the Lincoln Center Theater. The following four years she was awarded two Tony Awards under the featured actress category. The awards were given for her Broadway performances of Terrence McGally's play Master Class and Ragtime. In 2004 she was nominated for her fourth Tony Award, starring in A Raisin in the Sun alongside Sean Diddy Combs. And in 2012, her 5th Tony as well as her first win for the category of Leading Actress was won for her performance as the title character in The Gershwins Porgy and Bess. The actress made Broadway history when she became the most popular Tony Award nominee. The role she played as Billie Holiday at Emerson's Bar & Grill in the show, which also served to launch her Olivier Award nominated debut on London's West End in 2017, earned her six Tony Awards. The first actor to be awarded in four different acting categories, McDonald set a record for the amount of awards an actor has been awarded. Her credits in the theatre include The Secret Garden (1993) Marie Christine (993) Henry IV (2004) and 110 in the Shade (707). Twelfth Night marked McDonald's Public Theater Shakespeare in the Park debut. Shuffle Along is the Making of the Musical Seduction of 1921, and All That Followed. Frankie Johnny in the Clair de Lune. and Ohio State Murders. The Peabody Award-winning CBS program Having Our Say The Delany Sisters The First 100 Years that initially introduced McDonald viewers to her talents for her performance as a dramatic actor. The next time she appeared on television was that of a regular actor in NBC's Law & Order Special Victims Unit and she starred alongside Kathy Bates and Victor Garber. McDonald was awarded the first Emmy for her role on The HBO adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize winning play Wit written by Mike Nichols, starring Emma Thompson. In 2003 she was back on television, this time in Mister Sterling produced by Emmy Award-winner Lawrence O'Donnell Jr., which starred Josh Brolin. In 2006, McDonald appeared on WB's The Bedford Diaries. The next year she was an actor who appeared on NBC's Kidnapped. McDonald received a nomination for a fourth Emmy in 2016, for her role in HBO's movie in the series Lady Day, at Emerson's Bar & Grill. She starred alongside Taylor Schilling and Steven Pasquale in The Bite a six-episode pandemic-themed drama co-produced by Spectrum Originals and CBS Studios in 2021. McDonald has a brief appearance in The Good Wife, a CBS Legal drama The Good Wife as U.S. attorneys Liz Lawrence and Liz Reddick from 2009 to 2018, reprised these role (now called Liz Reddick) in The Good Fight in the role of the Paramount+ season regular. McDonald has been nominated for three Critics Choice Award awards. The actress is currently a guest star in Julian Fellowes' historical drama The Gilded Age, which premieres on HBO.
